IP protection classes

Protection against contact and ingress of water and dirt

In many applications, computers and monitors have to work safely for many years under difficult environmental conditions. Dirt, germs, bacteria, dust and moisture can rarely be kept out.

The effects of inappropriate contact with foreign bodies or other objects can also hardly be avoided, especially in the operating theater.

The IP protection classes determine the extent to which an electrical component can be exposed to environmental influences without being damaged or posing a safety risk.

In medically sensitive areas, appropriate IP protection offers safety for the device and patient, as the devices can be cleaned without hesitation using standard hospital disinfectants.

Code number 1 for contact protection IP Code number 2 for water protection
0 no contact protection no foreign body protection 0 no water protection
1 Protection against foreign objects with a diameter of >50mm 1 Protected against vertically falling drops of water
2 Protection against foreign objects with a diameter of >12mm 2 Protected against water droplets falling at an angle (15° from the vertical)
3 Protection against foreign objects with a diameter of >2.5 mm 3 Protected against water spray (up to 60° from the vertical)
4 Protection against foreign bodies with a diameter of >1mm 4 Protected against water spray
5 Complete contact protection, protection against dust deposits inside 5 Protected against water jets (from all directions)
6 Complete contact protection, protection against dust ingress 6 Protected against water ingress in the event of temporary flooding
7 7 Protected from water ingress during immersion
8 8 Protected from water ingress when immersed for an indefinite period of time
9 9 Protected against water ingress from any direction, even at high pressure against the housing. (high-pressure/steam jet cleaner, 80-100 bar)
